Renewable energy outpaces coal for electricity generation in historic first, report says
"I think that most economies want to expand their clean electricity, but some are more strategic and seizing on the opportunity than others,"
"There has been more investment in infrastructure that facilitates clean growth [in emerging economies] than in many advanced economies,"
"This is probably about some countries missing the opportunities, and maybe they don't realize it, but that's what it is."
"exceeded demand growth and led to a slight fall in fossil fuel use."
Renewable electricity accounted for 34.3% of global consumption in the first half of 2025, while coal accounted for 33.1%, marking a global shift in primary electricity sources. China and India led increases in renewable deployment, driving the change. Several Western regions, including the European Union and the United States, increased coal consumption during the period despite a global coal-generation decline of 0.6% year-on-year. Countries such as Hungary, Pakistan and Australia generated 20% or more of electricity from solar, setting national records. Global carbon dioxide emissions fell slightly as solar and wind exceeded demand growth and reduced fossil-fuel use. Emerging economies invested significantly in clean-energy infrastructure, enhancing energy autonomy.
