A recent federal court ruling ordered Citibank to facilitate the release of $625 million in climate grant funding until an appeals court intervened. This funding, part of the Environmental Protection Agency's Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund under the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, was originally frozen at the Trump administration's request. Nonprofits like Climate United, which is at risk of layoffs due to lack of access to funds, are determined to oppose this stay, emphasizing the long-term impact on their operations and public trust.
"If this freeze continues, we will continue to lose trust, lose projects, and lose capacity to operate," said Beth Bafford, chief executive of Climate United.
Lee Zeldin, the administrator of the E.P.A., criticized parts of the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, citing concerns over waste and oversight.
