Record renewable energy growth falls short of climate goals DW 10/15/2025
"The newly installed capacity from renewable energies amounted to around 582 gigawatts in 2024, or around 15.1% more than the previous year. While this was the highest amount ever recorded, in its report IRENA stressed that this was not enough for countries to reach global renewable energy goals, which target a yearly increase of 16.6%."
"Renewables are deployed faster and cheaper than fossil fuels driving growth, jobs, and affordable power. But the window to keep the 1.5C limit within reach is rapidly closing,"
"We must step up, scale up and speed up the just energy transition for everyone, everywhere,"
Installed renewable capacity reached about 582 gigawatts in 2024, a 15.1% increase over the previous year and the largest annual addition recorded. Annual additions must average roughly 1.122 terawatts to reach the COP28 target of 11.2 terawatts by 2030, meaning current growth falls short of the required 16.6% yearly expansion. IRENA comprises 169 countries and the European Union. The UN Secretary-General warned the window to limit warming to 1.5°C is rapidly closing and called for stepping up, scaling up and speeding up a just energy transition. Global long-term warming was estimated at 1.3°C last year. COP30 will be in Belém, Brazil on November 10.
