Rainham landfill site set to continue for years - and gas 'released for decades'
Briefly

Havering Council's strategic planning committee is set to approve extending the operational life of the Veolia landfill site until December 31, 2029, allowing an additional one million cubic metres of non-hazardous waste. The site will then be leveled for greening and transformed into public open space by 2031, including a proposed water sports facility. The compound area managing landfill gas and leachate must operate for 40 to 50 years to stabilize post-closure emissions. The landfill spans 177 hectares along the River Thames, with waste disposal starting in 1997.
