A female southern sea otter at Steamer Lane rose most of her body upright out of the water in an unusually pronounced periscoping posture while a surfer rode a wave nearby. The posture appeared so odd that a sea otter expert initially thought the image was AI-generated. Periscoping is a known behavior when an otter inspects its surroundings, but this instance resembled an extreme version of that behavior. The incident came amid a string of unusual interactions at the Westside surf break, including otters boarding or feeding near surfers and first responders assisting a returning surfer.
