Campaigners held a Free the 15 demonstration demanding the release of 15 gentoo penguins kept in a basement at Sea Life London Aquarium. Between 250 and 300 people attended the protest, organised by Freedom For Animals with support from Born Free and The Express. The aquarium opened its first penguin exhibit in May 2011, introducing 10 gentoo penguins from Edinburgh Zoo. Campaigners say the birds have spent up to 14 years in a basement with a pool only six to seven feet deep and lacking sunlight and fresh air. Musician-turned-environmentalist Feargal Sharkey accused the company of exploiting the birds for profit and challenged Merlin Entertainments’ chief executive to swap places with the penguins. Merlin Entertainments is co-run by Blackstone Group, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, and Kirkbi and owns multiple UK attractions.
