Plan to increase waste burning sparks backlash
"It wasn't like this 30 years ago. The smell and the taste have got quite bad. You can actually taste it in the back of your throat."
"The amount of traffic you get now, the lorries are just continuous,"
"significant pollution or harm to the environment or harm to human health"
"They don't want extra traffic and they don't want extra pollution."
The Beddington Energy Recovery Facility currently processes up to 347,000 tonnes of waste annually and an operator has applied to raise that to 380,000 tonnes. The operator frames energy recovery as a cleaner alternative to landfill. Local residents report stronger smells, a metallic taste, and continuous lorry traffic near the site. Sutton Council and an independent community group oppose the proposed increase and have launched a petition. The incinerator breached emission limits 916 times between 2022 and 2024. The operator attributed breaches to a third-party contractor, described them as very small and not a health risk, and implemented safeguards. The Environment Agency has indicated it will not grant a permit if the activity would cause "significant pollution or harm to the environment or harm to human health."
