Objector group launches crowdfund for High Court case against 1.3bn sewage infrastructure extending off Dublin coast
"The objector group - the GDD Steering Committee - claim the new pipeline will discharge an average daily flow of approximately 200 Olympic-sized swimming pools of waste per day, resulting in serious illnesses for surrounding human and marine life. Uisce Éireann has described the project as "the next major step in the development of our wastewater infrastructure for Dublin and the surrounding counties". The pipeline will stretch from Abbotstown in west Dublin through a new wastewater treatment plant due to be built in Clonshaugh,"
"This area of water in the Irish Sea is a protected UNESCO biosphere designated to protect the Harbour porpoise population and is home to the main breeding ground for seals in Dublin Bay and the Irish Sea. Among the harmful substances the GDD Steering Committee Team claims will be released into the water are heavy metals chromium and cobalt, microplastics and pharmaceutical residues."
The Greater Dublin Drainage project received planning approval and proposes a pipeline from Abbotstown through a new Clonshaugh treatment plant to discharge effluent 6km off Baldoyle and 900m from Ireland's Eye. The GDD Steering Committee alleges the pipeline will release an average daily flow equivalent to about 200 Olympic-sized swimming pools, posing risks of serious illnesses to nearby humans and marine life. The group cites potential releases of chromium, cobalt, microplastics and pharmaceutical residues. New proposed legislation could force objectors to face six-figure legal costs. The committee is fundraising for High Court action with a hearing set for December 8–9.
