"More rough weather is forecast on both coasts when the ball drops on Wednesday night, ringing in 2026. On the West Coast, more rain is expected across drenched California. There is a slight risk for renewed flash flooding in Southern California, where residents are still recovering from last week's torrential rain. In the Northeast, another round of snow will hit on New Year's Eve, especially in areas that usually see lake effect snow."
"On New Year's Day, the lake effect snow will continue off of lakes Erie and Ontario. That new snow could bring the total snowfall to 1 to 3 feet in places like Orchard Park in upstate New York. In the West, the rain will become more widespread, falling all day on Thursday in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Portland and Seattle. Colder than normal temperatures are expected Thursday from Minneapolis to Washington, D.C."
Unsettled weather will impact both U.S. coasts over the New Year's period. The West will receive additional rain across already drenched California, with a slight risk of renewed flash flooding in Southern California. The Northeast will see another round of snow on New Year's Eve, with lake-effect bands producing localized heavy snowfall and a few flurries possible in Times Square without accumulation. On New Year's Day, lake-effect snow off Erie and Ontario could add 1 to 3 feet in some upstate New York locations. Much of the interior West and Great Plains will remain dry and above average in temperature.
