The Southern Coalition for Social Justice has filed a motion on behalf of the NAACP New Hanover County Branch against Chemours and DuPont's efforts to seal documents related to PFAS contamination in the Cape Fear River. The documents are believed to contain evidence of harmful chemical releases affecting local water supply. The motion argues that public interest necessitates access to this information, especially given ongoing tests revealing widespread contamination and the companies' plans to expand operations in the area.
There is no question that there has been widespread PFAS contamination of the Cape Fear River Basin. Ongoing testing continues to find an expanding field of affected drinking supply wells.
The public has a right to the information to enable them to make informed decisions about their homes, drinking water use, and health care.
