"support Britain's digital ambitions while boosting grid capacity for future projects to plug in"
National Grid has started upgrading a 400kV substation in Didcot, Oxfordshire to connect datacentres to the grid and increase local power flexibility. Linxon will oversee construction and management, drawing on prior collaborations including London Power Tunnels 2. The Didcot site lies about two miles from the UK government's first confirmed AI growth zone at Culham, UKAEA. The upgraded substation will support datacentre connections, boost grid capacity for future projects, and enhance reliability and efficiency for local and national communities. National Grid projects UK electricity demand will double by 2050, with datacentre demand rising from 3% in 2025 to 9% by 2035.
