More than 80 countries at Cop30 join call for roadmap to fossil fuel phase-out
"This could be the turning point of Cop30. This was a strong signal coming from global south and global north countries on the need to phase out fossil fuels. They are following the call of 40,000 people on the streets of Belem and millions of people around the world. The presidency [of the Cop] and the rest of the parties have to heed this call. The climate needs it, the people demand it."
"Let's get behind the idea of a fossil fuel roadmap, let's work together and make it a plan. Can Cop30 begin the process of phasing out fossil fuels?"
More than 80 countries from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Pacific, the EU and the UK united to demand a roadmap to phase out fossil fuels at COP30. Tina Stege, climate envoy for the Marshall Islands, urged collective action and asked whether COP30 can begin the process of phasing out fossil fuels. Campaigners welcomed the move, with Greenpeace describing it as a potential turning point driven by mass public protests. COP28 committed to a fossil fuel transition, but Saudi Arabia and others have tried to unpick that resolution. Brazil excluded the transition from the COP30 agenda and from presidency consultations. Key contentious issues remain finance, trade, transparency and weak nationally determined contributions (NDCs).
