""Harassing them is punishable by up to one year in jail in addition to a fine.""
A man on a Hawaii beach was filmed grabbing a sea turtle, propping the animal up for a photograph, then dropping it back onto the sand and patting its back. Marine life advocate Melina Clark described the incident as disturbing and disgusting and said it showed no improvement in 2025. Hawaiian green sea turtles are protected under state law and the federal Endangered Species Act, and approaching them too closely can lead to a citation. Harassment can carry up to one year in jail and fines. Conservation officers have taken a report and are investigating.
