London's Pocket Parks: Essex Road Gardens, Barking, IG11
"However, by the turn of the 20th-century, this part of town was still not-town, and very much arable land. By the 1920s, roads were laid out, and some housing was slowly being built, but it wasn't until the late 1930s that almost all the houses were built in this part of Barking. Almost, but as it turns out, not quite all, as three more would be added later, and directly affect the pocket park."
"It was given a bit of a makeover in 2010 when the current design was created, with a large circular pavement in the middle and clearer pavements on either side leading to two new entrances. Also though a couple of the larger trees needed to be taken down, which does have the advantage of opening up the park a bit and not leaving it as shady as it would have been."
This tiny pocket park lies near Barking town centre on a triangular plot at the junction of Essex Road and Suffolk Road. The surrounding area remained largely rural until railways arrived and housing development expanded through the 1920s and 1930s. Three later houses reduced the original rectangle adjacent to the triangle, leaving the small triangular green. The park received a redesign in 2010 featuring a large circular pavement, clearer side pavements, two new entrances, a wavy path from the original point entrance, modern green fencing, and removal of some larger trees. A semi-circular wooden bench, a playground, and signs about dumping were also added.
