India and Pakistan share flood risks and must combine solutions
"This summer, monsoon rains have brought catastrophe across the Punjab region of India and Pakistan."
"Overflowing rivers have submerged thousands of villages, displaced millions of people and claimed hundreds of lives (see go.nature.com/42qa637)."
"In Pakistan's Punjab alone, almost 2 million people have been evacuated, and the humanitarian toll continues to mount in both regions."
Monsoon rains triggered catastrophic flooding across the Punjab region of India and Pakistan this summer. Overflowing rivers submerged thousands of villages and inundated large swathes of agricultural land. Millions of people were displaced and hundreds of deaths were reported. In Pakistan's Punjab almost 2 million people were evacuated. Emergency services and humanitarian responders are stretched as the humanitarian toll continues to mount across both regions. Widespread displacement is creating urgent needs for shelter, clean water, medical care and food assistance. Damage to infrastructure, homes and crops threatens long-term recovery and food security for affected communities.
