""I think one of the reasons why fog is so cool to look at and study - beyond its absolute stunning beauty - is that it's just so multi-dimensional,""
""Our coastline is perfectly situated to be a barrier or a gate to this floating water.""
Fog is a suspension of water droplets in air that forms when cool temperatures and humid air cause moisture to condense near the surface. Coastal upwelling and Pacific winds bring frigid subsurface waters and moist air to the Bay Area, keeping ocean temperatures in the 50s year-round. Cooling of moist air over the chilly ocean produces fog. In winter the fog generally remains close to shore, while summer sea breezes and seasonal circulation can draw fog inland across the Peninsula and into the East Bay. Fog interacts with Bay Area ecology and human life over centuries, though cultural expressions from indigenous peoples have not survived.
