Mark Stevens and the charity British Divers Marine Life Rescue responded to a northern bottlenose whale that swam into the River Thames near the Houses of Parliament in January 2006. The 19ft (5.85m) deep-diving whale prompted widespread public interest, with thousands gathering on riverbanks and bridges. Stevens left work to join the rescue, appeared on breakfast television, and boarded a boat near Albert Bridge. Journalists pursued the rescue team and were persuaded to use their vessel to help maneuver the whale onto a sandbank for veterinary assessment. The team judged survival chances roughly fifty-fifty, required a crane to winch the heavy whale onto a barge, and later experienced lasting post-traumatic stress disorder from the incident.
