A major gas pipeline ruptured in Castaic, producing giant plumes of dust, a collapsed hillside and a roar resembling a jet engine. The break forced a nearly four-hour closure of the 5 Freeway and prompted shelter-in-place orders for nearby residents. Aerial imagery shows a large landslide with a visible head scarp adjacent to the rupture. Recent heavy and sustained rainfall increased driving forces within the soil while reducing soil strength, raising the likelihood of slope movement. Crews will work to repair the damaged pipeline over the next few days.
