""We also know that long-term help is needed," Healey said in a statement. "That's why we're going to keep working every day to bring more energy into our state, oppose rate hikes and get charges off bills.""
Electricity bills in Massachusetts will be reduced by 25% and gas bills by 10% for every residential utility customer in February and March. The state will use $180 million from existing funds to cover the reductions. Customers will see lower rates beginning with February bills. Last year, $220 million reached consumers through rebates and lower bills after energy prices spiked. Legislation aims to bring additional energy into the state and save consumers $13 billion by allowing utilities to secure market prices. The Department of Public Utilities must justify every charge on bills and eliminate unnecessary fees. A new Canadian transmission line now supplies 20% of the state's electricity with hydropower, lowering costs by about $50 million annually.
