""I was shown documents that were supposed to prove this is all okay and legal,""
""but I could see at first glance that this wasn't right.""
""But you could see right away that these weren't plastic bottles or bags full of pure plastic.""
""The Czech man paid rent once, dumped the trash here and disappeared," she said."
Tonnes of hazardous trash including fiberglass wind-turbine debris, shredded hard drives and car batteries were dumped in Jirikov in December. Mayor Barbora Siskova stopped additional trucks from a German company and initiated an investigation. Paperwork mislabelled the waste as plastic awaiting recycling, but visual inspection revealed mixed toxic materials. A Czech man posing to rent and buy a former sawmill arranged temporary outdoor storage, paid one rent, dumped the waste and disappeared. Czech police and customs returned further trucks and uncovered other dump sites near Brno. German authorities detained a Bavarian waste-company CEO and a Czech truck driver on 21 counts of illegal cross-border waste shipments and deliberate mislabeling.
