"It was an extremely high intensity fire that went through the Teakettle, and it does not look good at all there,"
"For the researchers, how heartbreaking it must be to see the area where you've put so much time, energy and effort just gone."
"Operational challenges have disproportionately impacted the ability to implement prescribed fire across the country."
Lightning ignited the Garnet Fire, which raced through roughly 3,000 acres of old-growth mixed-conifer and red fir in the central Sierra Nevada. The Teakettle Experimental Forest last burned in 1865 but historically experiences wildfire about every 15 years, allowing 160 years of fuel accumulation. The blaze burned with such high intensity that most trees were killed, including some up to 600 years old. Forest Service scientists had planned a large prescribed burn intended to reduce fuels and improve survivability. The Forest Service has fallen behind on prescribed burning, citing operational challenges and competing active wildfires.
