Flood advisory issued for Halton due to snowmelt, forecasts of rain | CBC News
"While widespread flooding isn't expected, there might be fast flowing water at nearby rivers and creeks and flooding in low-lying areas and natural floodplains. The safety advisories come after a record-breaking storm in late January blanketed southern Ontario in snow, much of which stuck around as the longest cold stretch in a decade kept the region in a deep freeze."
"Anyone going out to nearby bodies of water, bridges or dams are warned to keep children and themselves at a distance. Elevated water levels, fast flowing water, and cold water temperatures, combined with slippery conditions along stream banks continue to make these locations extremely dangerous, said Conservation Halton. It said the advisory is issued as an early notice to potential flooding based on weather forecasts and other conditions, such as snowmelt."
Conservation Halton issued an advisory from Sunday morning until Friday because melting snowpack and forecast precipitation could produce spring flooding and ice jams. Widespread flooding is not expected, but fast-flowing water may occur at rivers and creeks and low-lying areas and natural floodplains could flood. A record-breaking late January storm left substantial snow that remained during an extended cold spell. Elevated water levels, fast currents, cold temperatures, and slippery stream banks create extremely dangerous conditions near bodies of water, bridges, and dams. The advisory serves as an early notice based on forecasts and snowmelt.
