'Existential problem': California state park users concerned about new neighbor
"We do face an existential problem at Prairie City, of, as the development south of [Highway] 50 happens,"
"... Development is hot right now around Prairie City."
"We're going to need your help on how we move forward and what we do with these buffer areas."
A 2,704-acre utility-scale solar project called the Coyote Creek Agrivoltaic Ranch, developed by DESRI, is under consideration adjacent to Prairie City State Vehicular Recreation Area. Off-highway vehicle enthusiasts fear the solar farm and proposed housing developments—estimated at 30,000 homes—will encroach on and diminish recreational access to the amber foothills near Sacramento. Prairie City SVRA contains 1,344 acres of state land with over half devoted to OHV trails and tracks and has hosted the annual Hangtown Motocross Classic since 1979, drawing up to 25,000 visitors. Park leadership described an existential problem and requested help creating buffer areas and protections. A draft environmental impact report was released in February.
