"When a dense fog advisory is issued for your area, it means that widespread dense fog has developed and visibility can plummet to a quarter-mile or less. These conditions pose challenges for travel, so exercise extra caution on the road or consider postponing your trip if possible. If driving through fog becomes inevitable, remember these safety guidelines: Moderate your speed: Slow down and allocate extra travel time to reach your destination safely."
"Visibility priority: Ensure your vehicle is visible to others by using low-beam headlights, which also activate your taillights. If available, employ your fog lights. Avoid high-beams: Refrain from using high-beam headlights, as they create glare that impairs your visibility on the road. Keep your distance: Maintain a generous following distance to account for abrupt stops or shifting traffic patterns. Stay in your lane: To ensure you are staying in the correct lane, use the road's lane markings as a guide."
At 8:35 p.m. on Wednesday, the National Weather Service issued a dense fog advisory in effect until 7 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, for East Bay Interior Valleys. Visibility can drop to one-quarter mile or less, creating hazardous driving conditions. Drivers should slow down, use low-beam headlights (and fog lights if available), avoid high beams, and leave extra following distance. Use lane markings to stay in the correct lane. If visibility approaches zero, activate hazard lights and pull into a safe, off-road location or nearby parking area. If stopping on the roadside, deactivate all lights except hazards, set the emergency brake, and release the brake pedal.
