"Hunting has always been woven into Massachusetts' history - supporting families, boosting local economies, and helping keep our deer populations healthy," Gov. Maura Healey said in a statement. "These expanded regulations carry that tradition forward, creating more opportunities for hunters while protecting public health and ensuring we're maintaining balance in our wildlife populations."
""Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket are facing rapidly increasing deer populations," O'Shea said in the statem"
New regulations will expand deer hunting on Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket with a six-week primitive firearms and bowhunting season from Jan. 1 to Feb. 14 and an early fall season adding 10 primitive hunting days from Sept. 21 to Oct. 1. The Healey-Driscoll administration and MassWildlife cited rapidly increasing deer densities on the islands, in some areas exceeding 100 deer per square mile versus the statewide goal of 12 to 18. Officials cited risks including spread of tick-borne disease, more deer-vehicle collisions, habitat and forest damage, coastal erosion, and threats to wildlife. Officials may consider further season expansion or allowing Sunday hunting.
