COP30: Summit struggles to reach fossil fuel phase out deal DW 11/21/2025
"We want to have a clear roadmap for phasing out fossil fuels,"
"in its present form, the proposal does not meet the minimum conditions required for a credible COP outcome."
"We cannot support an outcome that does not include a roadmap for implementing a just, orderly and equitable transition away from fossil fuels,"
A reference to phasing out fossil fuels was removed from the COP30 draft agreement, prompting Germany to call for a strengthened deal. Environment Minister Carsten Schneider led Germany's delegation and stated the need for a clear roadmap to phase out fossil fuels. Germany and several other countries sent a letter to the Brazilian presidency criticizing the latest draft and warning it fails to meet minimum conditions for a credible COP outcome. The letter states that an outcome lacking a roadmap for a just, orderly and equitable transition away from fossil fuels cannot be supported and would be a step backward.
