Anita Soina is a 26-year-old Kenyan climate activist of Maasai heritage with over 100,000 Instagram followers who founded a group organizing tree planting and cleanup campaigns. She traveled to Belém, Brazil, for COP30 and linked deforestation to drought, hunger, and water scarcity in Kenya. She expressed cautious optimism that COP30 could be a major win for the Global South while warning that broken promises have allowed the crisis to worsen. She identified lack of political will and misused resources as major barriers. Maurice K. Nyambe of Transparency International called for transparency and accountability in climate finance and carbon trading at COP30.
