Climate protesters throw paint on Sagrada Familia
Briefly

Angered Futuro Vegetal activists threw red and black paint on the Sagrada Familia facade in Barcelona on August 31 and were arrested, then released after paying €600 fines. The group protests perceived government complicity and lack of effective measures to combat climate change, linking extreme heat, drought and skyrocketing temperatures to the wildfires that destroyed thousands of hectares across Spain and the Iberian peninsula. The Spanish government called the situation an "emergency" and one of the biggest recent environmental catastrophes. International firefighting assistance arrived from countries including the Netherlands and Italy. Futuro Vegetal previously targeted high-profile sites and figures in other protests.
ANGERED climate activists from the Futuro Vegetal organisation threw red and black paint on the façade of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona on Sunday, August 31, to protest the inaction of the government regarding the vicious fires ravaging a large part of Spain this summer. The organisation is protesting the complicity of the government in response to the fires that have destroyed thousands of hectares of land not only in Spain, but in much of the Iberian peninsula as a whole. Specifically, Futuro Vegetal criticises the lack of effective government measures to combat climate change, whose extreme heat has been a major instigator in the extreme weather conditions including skyrocketing temperatures and extended droughts that led to the wildfires, which have been some of the worst since the year 1994.
