"The site's online reviews are littered with warnings from travelers who either had to help tow someone out by the sign or had to call for assistance to wrest their own vehicles from the dirt. “The sand looks innocent until it grabs your wheels and laughs while you sink like a sad desert submarine,” cautioned one person via Google Maps. “My car got stuck. Badly. Don't repeat my life choices.”"
A huge wooden sign reading “The End of the World” sits about 20 miles from Joshua Tree National Park near Amboy Road in the high desert. The sign is 14 by 100 feet, styled like the Hollywood sign, and installed in 2022 by Jack Pierson. The site is remote, surrounded by mountains and a nearby old restaurant open only on weekends. Weather has battered the letters, with some fallen and others stripped, exposing their insides. Despite its apocalyptic message, the location is also known for cars getting stuck in soft sand. Online reviews warn that the sand appears harmless but can grab wheels, sink vehicles, and require towing or assistance, even for four-wheel drive.
