Caltrans Barrels Ahead With Study of East Bay Truck Ban | KQED
"Caltrans is inviting the public to weigh in on how lifting a decades-old truck ban on I-580 would impact Oakland, San Leandro and other East Bay communities."
""By the time this study is complete, my students will be in college," Messac said."
""This is a textbook example of structural racism: A decision that on its face may seem to be race neutral, not motivated by any sort of racial animosity, but downstream has profound racial impacts and effects.""
Caltrans is several months into a study examining impacts of allowing large trucks on Interstate 580. Initial slides were shared at a Bay Area Air District meeting. Large diesel trucks currently travel primarily along I-880 through Oakland and San Leandro, concentrating pollution in flatland neighborhoods. A sixth-grade class and their teacher reignited debate in 2021 after studying the ban and health impacts. Some students living near I-880 reported respiratory problems they linked to air pollution. Community members expressed frustration with the study timeline and concern that I-580 residents remain unaware.
