Beloved Big Bear bald eagles Jackie and Shadow lose both eggs after ravens invade nest
"We will never know why, but we are sure they had their reasons as they have been incubating the eggs faithfully,"
"It is possible Jackie and Shadow sensed something was wrong with the egg. They could have also been protecting their territory as many other bald eagles have been seen in the valley recently."
"There is a possibility Jackie might lay a 2nd clutch of eggs since these were lost early on and we are still early in the season, but there is no guarantee. Jackie and Shadow will need to move on from incubating first. It generally takes a month for a female's body to recover and be ready to lay eggs again,"
Jackie and Shadow, a bald eagle pair in Big Bear, laid eggs in their nest. Shadow left the nest around noon and Jackie did not return, leaving the nest unattended for several hours. Around 3:30 p.m., a raven landed in the nest and pecked the eggs; later ravens breached both eggs. Jackie returned and continued to incubate one of the breached eggs. There is a possibility Jackie might lay a second clutch since the loss occurred early in the season, but a female typically needs about a month to recover before laying again. The pair have raised eaglets in previous seasons, including Sunny and Gizmo.
