"The London Wildlife Trust, in partnership with Barking and Dagenham Council, plans to reintroduce the beavers and also white storks into Eastbrookend Country Park following recent work to make the area suitable for them. The storks are expected on site in autumn 2026, with beavers arriving the following year. A purpose-built aviary will house the reintroduced white storks, whose chicks will eventually be released to help establish a new breeding population in the area."
"The beavers will be released into a publicly accessible enclosure featuring two lakes, under licence from Natural England. As renowned 'ecosystem engineers', beavers have an extraordinary ability to reshape their surroundings, creating rich wetland habitats that support a wide variety of wildlife. These include wetland plants and invertebrates to birds, bats, fish and small mammals. Fallen trees introduced by beavers also create natural perching and nesting sites, which are particularly beneficial for kingfishers, offering valuable vantage points for feeding and breeding."
White storks and beavers will be reintroduced to Eastbrookend Country Park in Dagenham as part of a rewilding scheme. White storks are due in autumn 2026 and will be housed in a purpose-built aviary, with chicks released later to establish a breeding population. Beavers are scheduled to arrive the following year and will live in a publicly accessible fenced enclosure containing two artificial lakes. The lakes originated from gravel extraction that began in the 1920s for the Becontree Estate. Beavers will create wetland habitats that support plants, invertebrates, birds, bats, fish and small mammals; stork nests will provide habitat benefits for other species.
