"As the rust expands, it weakens the rock and helps break it apart. It's a very red part of the country, it's got that rusty hue, so you get that color getting whipped up with the strong winds."
Tropical cyclone Narelle became the first storm in over 20 years to make landfall in three Australian states and territories, impacting over 3,400 miles of coastline. Just before landfall, the sky turned a bright red, attributed to dust and oxidized iron-rich rocks in the region. Videos showed residents in disbelief at the unusual sight. The Bureau of Meteorology explained that the red hue was caused by strong winds whipping up the rust-colored dust from the local landscape, creating a striking visual effect.
