Bushfires across Victoria destroyed homes, forced evacuations, and burned vast swathes of bushland as temperatures and winds intensified fire behavior. Firefighters battled around 30 active blazes while the state's fire danger rating reached the highest catastrophic level. Temperatures were forecast near 46 degrees Celsius with damaging winds that made some areas undefendable. Dozens of communities were evacuated and many parks and campgrounds were closed. Major fires near Longwood and Walwa burned tens of thousands of hectares, destroyed multiple homes and community buildings, and left people missing and livelihoods devastated.
