""Rivers unite,""
""There's a connectivity in rivers because everybody along a river is part of the same river-basin ecosystem.""
""Both Greeks and Albanians will benefit,""
""The river unites these people around the vision of a transboundary national park that covers the entire river basin.""
The Vjosa River rises in the Pindus Mountains in Greece and flows northwest through Greece and Albania into the Adriatic Sea. In March 2023 Albania established the Vjosa Wild River National Park, protecting a lengthy stretch of riverine habitat. Migratory species such as the European eel travel from the Adriatic delta to the river source, illustrating the river-basin connectivity that makes transboundary protection necessary. RiverWatch and local activists seek to extend the protected area into Greek territory to cover the full basin. The regional Save the Blue Heart of Europe campaign mobilizes cross-border efforts across the Balkans to resist dam projects and conserve free-flowing rivers.
