A Courtland Creek restoration breathes new life into a community park
Briefly

The restoration of Courtland Creek in Oakland marks a significant achievement after nearly 30 years of community efforts and a partnership with the city. Once overrun with trash and debris, the creek has been transformed into a clean, open space that features new park infrastructure, colorful mosaics, and protective measures against future dumping. The recent ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrated the completion of restoration work, which began in 2019, funded by Measure DD from 2002. The revitalization provides both ecological benefits and a refreshing public area for residents.
For years, these sections of Courtland Creek were overgrown with vegetation, trash-strewn, unsightly, and clogged with debris. Then, a group of neighbors decided to reclaim them.
The celebration marked the end of years of work focused on removing debris and trash from the stream; creating park infrastructure and artwork; and restructuring the area to deter dumping and other crimes.
Now, with the aid of the city of Oakland, the creek's yearslong restoration is complete.
When I visited last Tuesday, I could hardly picture that the area was ever anything other than clean, open parkland.
