"And what we're seeing here today is a project that gives us a glimpse of a kind of new economy that we want to build, a fairer economy where people can have ownership over their own community energy assets like this here. Now, here we've got solar panels and in other places that might be batteries and other projects are looking at different technologies. But this is all about giving people, not just in London, but across the country, real ownership over these energy assets."
"Amanda McGrath, the Managing Director of the project, said she couldn't see why any other organisation in the capital and beyond who owned their own building wouldn't look to take advantage of the scheme. From a kind of sustainable perspective, it's something that's really important to us here that we're trying to be as carbon neutral as possible, she said."
Social clubs, places of worship and community centres will be eligible to bid for funding to generate clean energy. The plan aims to enable local communities to own and control clean energy so profits remain within communities rather than flowing to large energy firms. The scheme is presented as a model for a fairer economy and a way to reduce energy bills. Projects may include solar panels, batteries and other technologies. The initiative encourages organisations that own buildings to adopt community energy projects and pursue carbon-neutral and sustainable practices.
