Senegal return for a third consecutive World Cup, having first appeared in 2002 in South Korea and Japan. Their best World Cup finish is a quarterfinal in 2002, when they beat defending champions France 1-0, topped a group containing Denmark and Uruguay, then eliminated Sweden in the last 16 and lost to Türkiye 1-0 in the quarterfinals. They qualified unbeaten and recently beat England 3-1 at Wembley, becoming the first African team to do so. Coach Pape Thiaw named a 28-man squad that must be cut by two players, with captain Sadio Mané, 34, set for his last World Cup and planning to retire from international football afterward. Mané was AFCON player of the tournament in January, scoring a sensational goal in a 1-0 semifinal win over Egypt en route to Senegal’s final against Morocco, which included a penalty-related protest.
"Their recent AFCON final against Morocco may have been marred by farce after they temporarily left the pitch in protest at a penalty, but there's no doubting their individual talent or strength as a unit."
