The Indian Premier League faces suspension over security concerns related to increasing tensions with Pakistan, as emphasized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India officials. The final fixtures of the Pakistan Super League were relocated to UAE due to safety issues. With several airports closed and a recent IPL match abandoned, the BCCI is prioritizing safety for players and fans. A decision on the IPL's future is pending, with relocation options to South Africa being considered after consultations with the government.
"It does not look nice that cricket goes on while the country is at war," an official of the Board of Control for Cricket in India told the news agency PTI.
Transport within India is already complicated, with 27 airports around the country shuttered including in the host city of Dharamsala.
BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla said on Thursday that a decision on the immediate future of the IPL would be taken on Friday after consultation with government officials.
The option of relocating to the UAE is off the table because it is already set to host the PSL, but a move to South Africa is feasible.
