England’s World Cup squad omissions of Cole Palmer and Phil Foden reflect how quickly football fortunes can change. Two years earlier, both players were central to England’s success, with Foden starting the Euro 2024 final against Spain and Palmer scoring after coming on. Both progressed through the Manchester City academy and were expected to be key figures for the 2026 campaign. Palmer previously faced criticism for being benched during Euro 2024, but he equalised against Spain and later won major individual awards. However, Palmer’s Premier League output dropped in the most recent season, and Foden’s form has also not matched earlier levels, leading to their exclusion.
"But while class may be permanent, form - for now - is temporary and this has cost both players a place at the World Cup. Palmer scored 37 Premier League goals in his first two seasons at Chelsea. But his form dipped this season. He still bagged nine goals in 25 Premier League appearances, but there was not the same zip or flash of brilliance."
