Ben Aitchison took a first five-wicket haul of the summer, exploiting bowler-friendly conditions to finish with 5-47 and help Derbyshire take control. Middlesex collapsed from 66-1 to 89-6 around lunch and were dismissed for 177 under cloudy skies. Rory Haydon, in only his sixth first-class match, contributed 2-60 from the other end. Middlesex’s seamers fought back after the initial assault, with Ryan Higgins taking 2-28 as Derbyshire reached 106-4 at stumps, trailing by 71 runs. Sam Robson struck early boundaries, but wickets fell as Geddes was dismissed after a wide long hop and Holden was trapped lbw. Robson later departed caught at slip, and du Plooy was trapped on the crease at the end of the opening over after lunch.
