"Mr. Szymaniak dedicated his professional life to education and served the Whitman-Hanson Regional School District with distinction in multiple roles,"
"He first served as Principal of Whitman-Hanson Regional High School from 2010 to 2018, then as Superintendent of Schools for the past 7 1/2 years."
"I became the superintendent to serve, to lead with honesty, integrity, and care for the people who make our schools what they are. And in this instance, I fell short of that standard."
Jeffrey Szymaniak resigned as superintendent of the Whitman-Hanson Regional School District effective Thursday following community backlash over staff reductions. Dr. John Marcus, principal of Duval Elementary School, is serving as acting superintendent while a successor is sought. Administrators discovered a roughly $1.39 million budget deficit in mid-October, which Szymaniak described as "unprecedented" and a "crisis." At a Nov. 5 school committee meeting, residents expressed outrage about planned cuts and perceived lack of transparency. On Nov. 16, reduction-in-force notices were sent and 23 staff members, including teachers and paraprofessionals, were let go.
