Wayne State Launches Prison Education Program
Briefly

In 2023, the reinstatement of Pell Grant eligibility for incarcerated individuals spurred colleges, including Wayne State University, to implement prison education programs. Wayne State's initiative offers a bachelor's degree to inmates, with 25 students enrolled. Despite potential Pell Grant cuts, the university is committed to supporting education for those in prison. High dropout rates among formerly incarcerated individuals highlight the need for these programs, which help reduce recidivism and enhance job prospects post-release, aligning with Wayne State's broader goals for urban economic development.
We know that today's workforce, much of it requires a college education, so it's almost a necessary criterion to earn a living wage in today's society.
Individuals who participate in postsecondary education programs while in prison are 48 percent less likely to be reincarcerated than those who don't.
