TRACX Program Connects Educators Worldwide with Ocean Science Research
"The TRACX program really strengthened my research skills by allowing me to engage directly with authentic ocean core data and learn how to analyze it using real scientific methods,"
"I feel more confident guiding my students through data-driven investigations and connecting classroom learning to real-world science."
"Visiting the Scientific Ocean Drilling labs was an incredible experience,"
"It made me feel like I was part of real scientific discovery rather than just learning about it."
TRACX convened teachers at the Gulf Coast Repository at Texas A&M University from August 10-15 for immersive ocean core research and curriculum development. Sharon Cooper led the inaugural program, funded by the U.S. Science Support Program. Educators worked with scientists and technical staff using equipment from the JOIDES Resolution to analyze geological data and interpret core samples. Participants joined investigative teams to create standards-aligned classroom resources and practiced authentic scientific methods. Teachers reported stronger research skills, increased confidence guiding data-driven student investigations, and a sense of participation in real scientific discovery. Educators are integrating these experiences into diverse classroom settings.
