Rohit Gupta, appointed June 27 as the provincial supervisor of the Toronto District School Board, rejected trustees' recommendation to rename three schools. He also increased some class sizes for special-needs students despite trustees recommending existing caps remain. The appointment followed one of five provincial takeovers tied to alleged financial mismanagement. Education Minister Paul Calandra signaled plans to possibly eliminate school board trustees provincewide by year-end. Trustees had targeted Sir John A. Macdonald Collegiate Institute, Ryerson Community School and Dundas Junior Public School for renaming because namesakes' legacies include colonial policies, residential schools and links to the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
