The 'School of Sanctuary' that welcomes those seeking safety
Briefly

Hampstead School was awarded the School of Sanctuary title during its International Arts Festival, recognizing its efforts to create a welcoming environment for refugees. The festival celebrates ethnic, cultural, and linguistic diversity, uniting the community. Schools must educate on forced migration issues and promote inclusivity. Hampstead has nearly 90 refugee students, with staff emphasizing kindness and support. The school's aim is to build a culture that benefits everyone and shares these values within the local community, demonstrating commitment to inclusivity and acceptance.
The award recognises the hard work and contributions of everyone at Hampstead School to help build a truly welcoming and inclusive environment for all, especially young people seeking sanctuary.
We are a powerful, extraordinary and kind community. There are nearly 90 refugee students on roll and some were forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution or natural disaster.
You can look around at the International Arts Festival and realise that Hampstead doesn't just talk the talk, it's absolutely walking the walk.
Schools must educate students, staff, and the public about the issues surrounding forced migration and create a safe and inclusive culture.
