Teachers Are Sharing How Different Students Are Today Versus How They Were 10 Years Ago
Teachers report before-and-after differences in student reading ability, thinking patterns, attention, and classroom behavior compared with students from a decade earlier. Some describe wider gaps between strongest and weakest students, with phone use linked to identifiable changes in performance. Others note increased manipulation and attempts to shift blame, including claims about not hearing during attendance. Academic integrity is described as harder to maintain, leading to in-class assignment requirements to reduce cheating and AI use. Chronic absenteeism is also reported as higher, with families placing less value on attendance. Math skills are described as weaker, including among honors students.
"I quit teaching in 2013 and restarted in 2023. When I left, my best kids were three-ish grade levels ahead, and my worst were three-ish behind. Now, my best are three-ish ahead, and my worst are nine behind. I can exactly pinpoint with no errors whose parents raised them by using phones. That's a much bigger difference than COVID. It's rewired their brains. I save the ones I can."
"Ditto on the increased manipulation. 'Hi, professor, I couldn't hear you when you called my name for attendance today.' That's because you weren't in the room when I took attendance. Are you trying to make me feel like it was my fault? Not to mention, the attendance is for the lab portion of the class in order to keep students from downloading the assignment and doing it at home using AI. Before this year, I never imagined taking attendance in any context in college. But it isn't about discipline - it's about academic integrity. Basically, the only way to get these students to do the assignments without cheating is to have them do them in the room with me. It sucks for all of us."
"My kids mostly came to school daily 10 years ago. Now, 30-40% are chronically absent. Their parents don't care about attendance either. Vacations are more important than their education. Also, their math skills suuuuuuck. My honors kids have weaker"
