A Toronto Catholic school board trustee is campaigning to convince the provincial government to reinstate the board’s soon-to-be-cancelled international languages program. The provincial education ministry announced the program would be removed from the daily curriculum, citing a violation of the provincial Education Act because international languages are not listed among courses that can be taught during the standard 300-minute school day. The cancellation will eliminate about 77 teaching jobs in September. The program costs about $6 million annually, paid by the school board and the province provides no funding.
