Students from four Wicklow schools pick up prestigious Irish language awards
Students from four secondary schools in Wicklow received Gaelbhratach awards for their commitment to the Irish language. The recognition took place at a ceremony at Mary Immaculate College in Limerick. The honoured schools were Coláiste Raithín and Woodbrook College in Bray, Coláiste Bhríde Carn an Bhua in Carnew, and Greystones Community College in Greystones. The awards formed part of a national effort by Gael Linn to encourage primary and post-primary students to use Irish naturally beyond the classroom. The programme is expanding year-on-year, with 2026 marking participation from all 32 counties for the first time. This year’s total of 165 post-primary schools was the highest to date, with primary school ceremonies planned later.
"Students from four secondary schools in Wicklow have been recognised for their commitment to the Irish language, receiving the prestigious Gaelbhratach award at a ceremony held in Mary Immaculate College in Limerick recently."
"The Wicklow schools in receipt of the honour were Coláiste Raithín and Woodbrook College, both in Bray, Coláiste Bhríde Carn an Bhua in Carnew, and Greystones Community College in Greystones."
"Delivered by Gael Linn, established in 1953 to promote new ventures for the benefit of the Irish language, the Gaelbhratach programme is a national initiative aimed at encouraging both primary and post-primary students to use Irish in a natural, everyday way beyond the classroom."
"Each flag symbolises the dedication of students and staff to integrating Irish into daily school life and fostering a positive attitude towards the language. Separate ceremonies for primary schools are scheduled to take place later in the year."
