Staten Island HS girls' tennis: NDA's Lee ousts defending champ in semis of borough CHSAA individuals
"STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Notre Dame Academy's Rachel Lee is back! After a sophomore-year hiatus, Lee has been playing some tough, competitive tennis for the Gators. After a stellar season at second singles, Lee saved her best tennis for the Staten Island CHSAA individual tournament Saturday, stunning two-time defending champion Yuriko Perpetua (Staten Island Academy) in a dramatic 6-3,1-6, 10-3 victory at the College of Staten Island courts,"
"In doubles action, SIA came up on point short of making the final an all-Tiger affair. The Tiger duo of Sarah Belushin and Kylie Gonzales were giving No. 2 seeds Ryan Burke and Michela Conforte of Hill all they could handle as they came back from a one-set deficit to force the master tiebreaker. After a back-and-forth tussle, Belushin and Gonzales led 9-8 and obtained match point. However, the Hill duo saved match point and won the next two to capture the match."
Rachel Lee returned to competitive tennis after a sophomore-year hiatus and delivered a dramatic semifinal upset, beating two-time defending champion Yuriko Perpetua 6-3, 1-6, 10-3 to reach the Staten Island CHSAA singles final. She had played second singles during the season. Emily Agushi advanced to the final with consecutive shutouts of Simone Feldman and Ava Manzella and will face Lee Sunday at 9 a.m. at the College of Staten Island. In doubles, Hill's Ryan Burke and Michela Conforte edged SIA's Sarah Belushin and Kylie Gonzales in a master tiebreaker after saving match point. Alternate singles finalists include Francesca D'Agostino and Vera Korshunova.
